Descendants of Thomas Janvier

Generation No. 1

        1.  Thomas2 Janvier  (Philip1) was born 1638 in LaFlotte, France.  He married Sussanah Mounier.  She was born 1645 in LAFLOTTE,ILE DE RE,FR, and died Aft. 1711 in London, Essex Co., England.

Generation No. 2

        2.  Thomas3 Janvier (Thomas2, Philip1) was born April 08, 1669 in Ile of Rhe', France (La Flotte), and died Abt. 1728 in New Castle, DE.  He married Sarah Jordain 1692 in New Castle, DE, daughter of Dr. Jordain (Dejardins) and Mary Tayne.  She was born Abt. 1674 in New Castle, DE, and died in New Castle, DE.

Notes for Thomas Janvier:
Thomas was the eldest son of Pierre.  He fled to England shortly after his father's death.

Thomas arrived on the ship "Desire" June 23, 1686.  He was listed from Plymouth, England and naturalized 2/21/1695.  He was French Huguenet.
His godparents were Mary Januvier and A. Jounneau - merchant.  He was naturalized as a citizen of William Penn's province of Pennsylvania 21 February 1695.  According to family tradition, Thomas was bitter about the treatment of his family in France, and changed his French name to its English equivalent, January.  Only a very few times in his life was he recorded as Janvier instead of January.  He was a large landowner.  He broght with him much wealth from the old country.  He engaged extensively in merchandising, milling and shipping.

Sarah Jordain January inherited her grandfather Tayne's estate on the "Strand" in New Castle.

Notes for Sarah Jordain:
Mary Sara  de Jourdain (Crosse).  She took stepfathers anme - Crosse.
William Crosse died in New Castle, DE.
She is buried in the Presbyterian Churchyard in New Castle.  Sarah was sometimes recorded as Sarah Crosse and sometimes as Sarah Jordain.  Her mother remarried after her father's death.  Thus, both names were used.  These were all families of the French ancestry, Huguenots, who had originally been Dutch citizens.

        12.  Thomas4 January (Thomas3 Janvier, Thomas2, Philip1) was born 1695 in New Castle, DE, and died Bef. 1776 in Philadelphia, PA.  He married Susannah Mounier.  She was born in LaFlotte, France.

Notes for Thomas January:
Thomas was a shipping merchant.  He provided guns during the French-Indian War to Gen. Bouquet.  Inherited fathers storehouse and shipping business on "The Strand" of New Castle, Delaware.

        13.  Isaac4 Janvier (Thomas3, Thomas2, Philip1) was born 1697, and died 1742.  He married Rachel Welch, daughter of John Welch.

        14.  Philip4 Janvier (Thomas3, Thomas2, Philip1) was born 1699, and died 1752 in New Castle.  He married (1) Mary Silsbie, daughter of Samuel Silsbie.    He married (2) John Janvier, son of Thomas Janvier and Sarah Jordain.  He was born 1703, and died 1751.
       
Children of Philip Janvier and Mary Silsbie are:
        26               i.    Isaac5 Janvier, died 1722.
        27              ii.    Samuel Janvier, died 1783.  He married Elizabeth Tatlow November 27, 1759.

        15.  John4 Janvier (Thomas3, Thomas2, Philip1) was born 1703, and died 1751.  He married (1) Mary de Haes, daughter of Roeloff de Haes and Sarah Neering.    He married (2) Philip Janvier, son of Thomas Janvier and Sarah Jordain.  He was born 1699, and died 1752 in New Castle.

        16.  Francis4 Janvier (Thomas3, Thomas2, Philip1) was born 1705.  He married (1) Elizabeth Calvert, daughter of John Calvert.    He married (2) Sarah de Haes, daughter of Roeloff de Haes and Sarah Neering.

Generation No. 4

        21.  Peter5 January (Thomas4, Thomas3 Janvier, Thomas2, Philip1) was born 1725 in Philadelphia, Big Cave, Cumberland Co., and died February 26, 1787 in Woodford Co., KY.  He married Deborah McMahon April 02, 1753 in Rocky Spring Society, PA Cumberland Co., daughter of James McMahon and Mary.  She was born 1729 in Cumberland Co., PA, and died Bet. 1759 - 1760 in Versailles, KY (Woodford Co.).

Notes for Peter January:
The daughter, Sarah, remained in Penns.  Peter and Deborah bought land in Philadelphia in 1761.  They went to Kentucky in 1780.
Supposedly when he was a young man he returned to France to make a futile effort to recover the family estates which were lost during the persecution of the Protestatns.  Before and after this journey he visited Ireland and Scotland.  He returned to American and settled in Philadelphia as a manufacturing jeweler.

He was a soldier in the colonia army during the Revolution.

In the spring of 1780 this January family and children along with forty other families moved to Kentucky floating the Ohio river on flatboats.

MO (Louisiana).  He married (1) Suzanna McFarland June 17, 1789 in Woodford Co., KY, daughter of William McFarland.  She was born 1770 in Woodford Co., KY, and died September 29, 1826 in Pike Co. Mo (Louisiana).  He married (2) Sara Black July 16, 1827 in Pulaski Co. KY.

Generation No. 6

        52.  Samuel Alonzo7 January (John Irwin6, Peter5, Thomas4, Thomas3 Janvier, Thomas2, Philip1) was born 1799 in Woodford Co., KY, and died after 1860 in Burnet County, TX.  He married Pamela January January 15, 1814 in Mason, Co. KY, daughter of Samuel January and Elizabeth Marshall.  She was born 1797 in Maysville, Mason Co. KY, and died in Burnet Co. TX.  The date of this marriage indicates Samuel was 15 years old when he married his 17 year old first cousin.  However, this in itself is not that unusual for the day and time.  


Samuel was Justice of the Peace in Harrison Co. TX (changed to Panola Co.)  I also read that a record had been found showing he served in the War of 1812.  I have not found that record and I've looked.  If he had, he would have served when he was 13 years old.  Again, that was not that unusual for that day and time as many young boys did serve when only in their early teens. 

Another place I had read from another researcher was that this couple lived with their family in Pike Co. IL until 1828 and then moved to Texas in 1841.  That was not the case.  They did not leave Pike County until later in the 1840's.  The last land record I could find was dated 1847.  This was purchase of land in Jo Daviess County, Illinois.

        86.  Amanda Elizabeth8 January (Samuel Alonzo7, John Irwin6, Peter5, Thomas4, Thomas3 Janvier, Thomas2, Philip1) was born April 1838 in Illinois, and died 1912 in Leakey, Tx.  She married (1) Constantine Foster.  He was born in VA.  She married (2) Dulana Washington Turner, son of John Turner and Elizabeth Turner.  He was born 1832 in Ala, and died November 09, 1862 in Tx.

Notes for Amanda Elizabeth January:
Amanda's first marriage was to Dulana Turner.  She had three osns by this marriage.  Dulana, died in the Civil War as did his brother.  Dulana died from measles.



Notes for Constantine Foster:
Constantine was a confederate soldier and is listed on the rolls as in "Burnet County Guards"  under commander William McKenzie.  He received a pension from the Confederate Army.

He was born in 1816 in Virginia and was a stonemasone. 

Jane, daughter of Constantine and Amanda, was carrying a candle down the stairs during an indian raid.  She tripped, caught on fire and burned to death.  She was only 16 years of age at the time.  Supposedly they had a brother, Richard, who drowned.

In 1880 Constantine's daughter, Cora was shown living with the Foster family and also Richard Coke, her three year old son.

In later years the Fosters lived with the Daniel Sandel family on their land in Leakey, Texas.  Amanda died in 1912 in Leakey, TX.

Notes for Maude Elizabeth Foster:
There were two death certificates on file for Maude Elizabeth Foster Sandel.  One was a correction to the first one.  Her name was listed as "Maude" and later changed to Amanda Elizabeth.  Maude was a nickname.  However, she was actually known as "Betty".
